So far, I'm enjoying it, and I have a feeling I'm going to keep enjoying it. This Ana girl has way more patients than I do, because I would have made him be straight forward with me from the get-go! I also find her brave, maybe not ever having experienced anything sort of puts her in a better position because she wouldn't know what to expect anyway.
I simultaneously hate and love this book. A lot of little things bother me - I think it's the worst writing ever and I get tired of hearing Anastasia say the same things over and over again: "Holy shit," "Oh my," etc. I also get distracted when the characters say things that seem very British rather than American (which makes sense since the author is from London). For example, Ana said "midday" instead of "noon," at one point, and Christian tends to say things like "I've not yet" blah blah blah.
But despite the shallow writing, I can't help but be intrigued about how this relationship works out. I want to be so turned off by Christian, knowing what I know about him, but he hasn't done anything yet to really scare me (which is what I'm expecting). I have been waiting to be really grossed out by Christian's desires but so far, he has been just been showing Ana a good time! And even though he says he doesn't do "hearts and flowers," that part of him is still coming through.
Did it seem weird to anybody else that Ana had never gotten drunk before and just randomly decided to finally get drunk and her friends didn't seem to think this was a big deal?
I was feeling the same way, like the book had been written by someone in high school. Still an interesting "story" so far. I also can't really wrap my mind around this being realistic, if she were really that sexually innocent, I don't think this would be playing out how it is...
Yes, the level of writing definitely leaves something to be desired. I was especially feeling this in the first couple chapters. It's still terrible, but at least getting a little more caught up in the story makes me ignore it more.
There's a total attraction to Christian as a confident, powerful man who knows what he wants. Decisiveness is a quality I often lack and completely admire. However, I can't help thinking I'd want to smack him when he switches over to his total control freak side. I want a partner in life. Not an owner!
Jhani, definitely agree with the whole she's never been drunk before part. First of all, the way they talk about wine/champagne celebrating, it seems surprising that by this final night she's never been drunk before. But since she says she hasn't it does seem strange that she just starts pounding booze and no one cares!
Also wasn't a fan of Jose getting so pushy. What's with this girl and domineering men? Christian may be a little screwed up, but at least he asks permission...
Faith - AMEN on the partner-rather-than-owner comments. That's my whole thing with this book. You want to root for the couple, for them to fall in love, for Christian to be sexy and smoldering and romantic....but at the end of the day, he's a control freak. And there is nothing sexy about that. *insert internal struggle here*
