I'm amazed by my high level interest in this book despite the fact that I am not a long-distance hiker. Strayed just has a way of casually telling her story in a way that remains intriguing and captivating. She really brings you through the full spectrum of emotions that she experiences; from fear to struggle to silliness (I had a good laugh when she saw the longhorn bull and just yells, "Moose!")

A funny anecdote: she talks about singing all sorts of random songs while alone on the trail, one of which is John Denver's "Country Roads." When did Vision Quest in high school (3 days and 3 nights of solo camping), not only did I also get to a crazed state of loudly singing all sorts of songs, but "Country Roads" was one of them - my mom used to sing it for my brother and I.

One last thing: I love that Cheryl Strayed was 26 years old when she hiked the trail - the exact age I am now. It helps me appreciate how much she had already endured at such an age and what an enormous adventure she was partaking in when she set off on this hike.
